Canadian platform competing with YouTube, Rumble has announced that it will no longer operate in Brazil. The reason, according to owner Chris Pavlovsky, is orders from the judiciary, which he says restrict freedom of expression and silence users with “unpopular views.”
– Recently, Brazilian courts demanded that we remove certain creators from Rumble. As part of our mission to restore a free and open Internet, we are committed to not changing the goals of our content policies. Users with unpopular opinions are free to access our platform on the same terms as our millions of other users – Pavlovsky said in a statement.
Saying he was “disappointed” with the decisions made, he said the brand will be disabled in Brazil while the company appeals court orders to remove users. The businessman added that he would not be “intimidated” by “requests from foreign governments” to “censor” Internet users.
Pavlovsky also expressed hope that Brazilian courts would “reconsider their decisions” so that the platform could soon resume its services in the country.
Because its premise is freedom of expression, the platform has become popular among right-wing figures, attracting people like Allan dos Santos and Rodrigo Constantino. In 2022, it reached 71 million users.
