AEW President Tony Khan has publicly addressed the mixed responses CM Punk has received from the public. Despite a warm reception in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois, when Collision debuted on June 16, Punk’s receptions have been more mixed since then.
Khan, during an appearance on Busted Open Radio, expressed no surprise at the mostly negative response Punk has received, especially during AEW’s current Canadian tour. He compared the situation to a sports team that is popular in its hometown but receives different responses on the road.
Khan said: “I wasn’t the least bit surprised by that considering we were in Canada and some of the things that happened leading up to the show and especially since the last time he fought …depends on where you are…I think it’s like an away game for him.
Punk didn’t shy away from playing the antagonist during matches when appropriate. Its reception, positive or negative, should be significant when AEW makes its All In Overseas debut at Wembley Stadium on August 27.
