uA couple died Friday, victims of an attack by a grizzly bear, in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.
According to Reuters, citing park officials and a friend of the victims, the bear also killed the couple’s dog, which was with them.
The warning came Friday from a GPS device indicating a bear attack in the Red Deer River valley west of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch in Banff National Park. The bodies were found Saturday morning.
Once located, the bear was euthanized because it displayed aggressive behavior, Parks Canada said.
This Canadian park, where brown bears and black bears live, attracts more than 4 million tourists each year. In fall, the number of bear sightings increases, as the animals are more active in gathering food, anticipating the winter hibernation period.
To Reuters, Kim Titchener, founder of Bear Safety and More, said these human-bear encounters are increasing as more people venture into these types of parks and natural spaces.
Fatal attacks are extremely rare, however, Titchener said, adding that only 14 percent of grizzly bear attacks worldwide result in death.
