Queen Elizabeth pressured Meghan Markle for an opinion on Trump in 2016, book claims

Queen Elizabeth II put the future Duchess of Sussex on hand for their first meeting, asking her opinion on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to Prince Harry’s new book, To save.

Harry revealed his grandmother’s interest in Trump by describing how the Duchess, then known as Meghan Markle, first met the late monarch during an impromptu meeting at Prince Andrew’s Royal Lodge. Harry brought her there to meet Sarah, Duchess of York, as his girlfriend at the time already knew her daughter, Princess Eugenie, and the Princess’ boyfriend (now her husband) Jack Brooksbank.

He described the late Queen’s first meeting with the future Duchess as “very pleasant” and noted that the meeting took place in late 2016, just before Trump’s shock victory over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Apparently, Trump was on his grandmother’s mind, prompting her to ask the American actress for her opinion on the future head of state.

“Grandma even asked Meg what she thought of Donald Trump,” he wrote.

The prince added that Meghan “sees politics as a no-win game” and described how she cleverly changed the subject to Canada, where she lived while filming the TV show. It suits.

In response, he said the late Queen was “cross-eyed” and replied to Meghan: “I thought you were American.”

The future Duchess replied: “I am, but I lived in Canada for seven years for work.”

Harry said his future wife’s response seemed to please his grandmother because Canada is part of the Commonwealth.

“Grandmother looked pleased. Community. Well, okay,” he wrote.

The late monarch will meet Trump two years later when he travels to the UK for his first visit as US head of state. The then president raised eyebrows for breaking royal protocol when he strolled past the Queen as she reviewed the troops outside Windsor Castle. He also appeared to not be bowing as usual when the two first met that day.

A spokesperson for the former president did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the The Independent.
