The Tesla Modely Y catches fire with its driver in Canada

Canadian authorities are investigating the cause of a Tesla Model Y fire that forced the driver to break a window to exit the vehicle in Vancouver. The car, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, caught fire near a red light after being cut off while the driver was inside.

According CTV News Vancouver
, Jamil Jutha was driving around 10am on Friday last week when the vehicle purchased just eight months ago suddenly stopped and lost power to all electronics. Doors and windows were immediately locked.

With smoke filling the car, the driver decided to kick the window to escape. He asked construction workers, who were on site, to help isolate the area due to the risk of an explosion.

Canada’s motor vehicle safety agency, Transport Canada, said in a statement it had informed Tesla and was working on a “joint inspection of the vehicle to determine the cause of the fire.”

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said, according to the Reuters
who “is aware of the incident and has contacted the manufacturer for information”.

“I literally stopped at a red light, pressed the left arrow and suddenly the warning: ‘Error! Error!’ So I see the smoke and I’m like, oh my God, what is this?! I couldn’t even open it, everything is electric, so everything stopped. The door couldn’t open, I couldn’t roll down the window, so I just said, ‘Okay, I’ll kick it,'” Jutha said in a video.

This is not the first incident involving Tesla. Last year, the US government launched an investigation into the company’s driver assistance system, known as Autopilot, after a series of collisions with parked emergency vehicles.
