President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) postponed until April 10 the resumption of visa fees for tourists coming to Brazil from the United States, Canada and Australia.

The measure was made official by a decree published in an additional edition of the “Official Journal of the Union” this Thursday (4).

The government has postponed the visa requirement for the second time. The original date was October 1, 2023, then postponed to January 10, 2024. The new date is now April 10. The requirement will take into account the date of arrival in Brazil.

The relaxation of the visa requirement was adopted in 2019, by the then president, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who did not require the same measure for Brazilians who intended to visit these countries.

Lula decided to return to the need for the document based on the principle of reciprocity. Brazil only ceases to require a visa if there is an equivalent counterpart in the other country.
