Zelensky’s presence at the G7 summit “could be a game-changer”

“This is a unique opportunity” for Zelensky to discuss with his allies of the G7 (the group of seven most industrialized countries in the world), but also to defend the cause of Ukraine against the Russian invasion with the various leaders of the countries of the South invited to the summit, underlined Macron, addressing his Ukrainian counterpart in English.

“I think this could be a game-changer,” he added, assuring the Ukrainian president that France will stand alongside Kiev “until the end”. Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the support.

Since arriving in Hiroshima this afternoon, Zelensky has held bilateral meetings with G7 officials and has also engaged with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who assured him that India would do “everything possible”. to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

According to the French presidency, Brazilian President Lula da Silva also intends to meet Zelensky at the summit: “He has shown great availability for dialogue,” he said.

The members of the G7 (Germany, Canada, United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom), plus the European Union, have been meeting since Friday at a summit in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

The leaders have already called on China to pressure Russia to end the war on Ukraine, while saying they want “constructive and stable” relations with Beijing.

“We call on China to put pressure on Russia to end its military aggression and withdraw its troops from Ukraine immediately, completely and unconditionally,” they said in a statement quoted by the French agency AFP.

Beijing remains a close ally of Moscow and has never condemned the Russian invasion, but sent a diplomat to Europe this week to try to broker a solution to the conflict.

Russia’s war against Ukraine has plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since the Second World War (1939-1945).

The number of civilian and military casualties in the conflict is unknown, but several sources, including the United Nations, have admitted that it will be very high.
